About Old Dominion Golfer

To paraphrase the late, great Harvey Penick: if you play golf in Virginia, you’re my friend. Welcome to Old Dominion Golfer.

Our goal is simple. We want to be your trusted resource for memorable Virginia Golf+ trips: great courses you can play, paired with the history, landmarks, and fun things to do that make a trip special.

You’ve come to the right place

If you’re planning a buddies trip or a gals trip that’s about more than just golf, you’ve come to the right place.

If you’re a couple looking for a romantic getaway, even with a non-golfer, you’ve come to the right place.

If you’re a camper or RVer looking for courses along your journey, you’ve come to the right place.

If you’re a senior or a solo golfer looking for a day trip, you’ve come to the right place.

Hi, I’m Dwayne Callis

Most folks call me D. I played in my first junior tournament at West Point Country Club in West Point, Virginia, in 1970. It’s still my home course.

I love golf courses!

I played high school golf at West Point High School and college golf at Hampden-Sydney College. I’ve played courses all over Virginia, from The Lonesome Pine Country Club in Big Stone Gap to Hell’s Point in Virginia Beach, and many, many in between.

I’ve been on countless golf trips, and I’ve planned and captained plenty of them, to places like Myrtle Beach, Pinehurst, Hilton Head, Scottsdale, Charlottesville, and the Shenandoah Valley. I’ve served on many golf committees, chaired a few (including Golf Chair at West Point Country Club), and planned and coached junior golf clinics.

My 40+ years in marketing and sales came with plenty of travel, event planning, and corporate entertaining. For 10 straight years, I helped coordinate corporate entertainment for VIP customers at the Masters.

Old Dominion Golfer brings together two things I love: golf travel, and golf in my home state of Virginia.

What we’re not

We’re not a golf teaching website. The only swing advice you’ll get here is this:

Pick a target, aim at the target, and hit your ball at the target. Then go find it, and repeat.

I’m an Old Dominion Golfer

I am one of you, an amateur golfer. Old Dominion Golfer is a brand. I’m not the Old Dominion Golfer, any more than you or anybody else is. I’m an Old Dominion Golfer, and there are many like me.

Let’s plan your trip

We’d love to help you create a memorable Golf+ bucket list trip. From pre-planned trips to curated customized excursions, we’re here to help.

Take a kid golfin’

Those of you who grew up in Central Virginia back in the day may remember a show called “The Southern Sportsman” with Franc White. I loved watching that show. Franc ended every episode with the same phrase: “Take a kid fishing.” In memory of Franc, we’d like to paraphrase:

Take a kid golfin’. It’s good for your soul.
